Action, not words    or    Do, don’t just talk
A motto emphasizing immersion, authenticity, and participation — putting the effort into living history rather than just speaking about it. The Krewe of the Black Heart strives to portray mulitiple time periods. Mostly, we follow the Golden Age of Piracy through dress, action and demeanor.

About the Krewe of the Black Heart

The Krewe of the Black Heart proudly stands as the oldest Pyrate Krewe in St. Augustine and Jacksonville, with a legacy stretching back to 1982. What began as a spirited gathering known as the Maiden’s Pub Association has grown into a vibrant, purpose-driven organization committed to celebrating and preserving the rich maritime and colonial heritage of Florida’s First Coast.

In 2008, with the launch of our custom-built Spanish galleon parade float, we embraced a bold new identity as the Krewe of the Black Heart. The galleon, a nod to the region’s deep Spanish roots, became our flagship—literally and figuratively—ushering in a new era of public participation, historical reenactment, and community celebration.

A Legacy of Service and Celebration

Over the years, we’ve evolved into much more than a parade presence. Today, we are a proud 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Florida Corporation, which allows us to offer tax-deductible benefits to those who support our mission: to bring history to life through education, outreach, and lively public engagement. From historic reenactments and local festivals to charitable events and school programs, we strive to keep the stories of the past alive for future generations.

Join us as we sail through history—with heart, heritage, and a whole lot of swagger.

Royal Service

One of our greatest honors is serving as Royal Guards to St. Augustine’s Royal Family. This prestigious role is a reflection of our dedication to local tradition, ceremony, and the preservation of our city’s unique cultural identity. As Royal Guards, we participate in official city functions, historical events, and ceremonial duties that highlight St. Augustine’s  past and enduring spirit.

We don’t just play a part in history—we live it.

Just a little of what we do

More Than a Krewe – A Community

The Krewe of the Black Heart is more than a group—it’s a family. Our members come from all walks of life but are united by a shared passion for history, community service, and of course, a good bit of swashbuckling fun. Whether we’re parading through the streets, raising funds for local causes, or standing guard in full regalia, we do so with pride, purpose, and plenty of panache.

Join the Adventure

We welcome all who feel the call of the sea, the love of history, and the joy of giving back. Whether you're a fellow reenactor, a local history buff, or simply someone who wants to make a difference while having fun, there’s a place for you aboard the Black Heart.

Support the Krewe. Join the mission. Keep history alive.

St. Augustine Easter Week Festival

The St. Augustine Easter Week Festival is a nonprofit 501(c)(3), volunteer-based organization dedicated to celebrating and preserving the city's rich colonial heritage. The festival promotes St. Augustine through the authentic portrayal of the 1672 Spanish Royal Family—the historic figures who commissioned and reigned during the construction of the iconic Castillo de San Marcos. This living history event brings the 17th-century Spanish court to life through elaborate costumes, ceremonial appearances, and community engagement. As proud Royal Guards to the Royal Family, the Krewe of the Black Heart is honored to play a role in this annual tradition, helping carry forward the stories, legacy, and pageantry that define the oldest city in the United States.

Lifting Spirits

For several years, the Krewe of the Black Heart has made it a heartfelt tradition to visit local nursing homes, bringing joy, laughter, and a touch of pirate magic to residents. These visits are more than just appearances—they’re moments of genuine connection, where we share stories, smiles, and the spirit of celebration with those who have paved the way before us. Whether it’s through music, costumes, or simply warm conversation, our goal is to lift spirits and brighten lives. As part of our mission to serve the community and keep history alive, these visits are some of the most rewarding experiences we share as a krewe.
